Merry Christmas 2005!!!!

Dear Family and Friends,

We can’t believe that this year is almost over.  The older we get, the faster it goes!  This has been a busy year for all of us.  Al and I have had an exciting one traveling a lot and still working on our house and yard.  In June, we went on an Alaska Cruise with my sisters and friends.  We all had a ball-it was truly an experience we will never forget.  Then we went on our annual beach trip to Carlsbad, CA with my sister Donna and her family from Vegas and all my girls.  It was very enjoyable.  Then in October, Al and I went on my “50th” birthday three day reunion cruise to Ensenada with others from my graduating class.  November found us in Mammoth for four days where we experienced our first snow of the season.  Dena, Tiona, Ashley and I spent Thanksgiving in Vegas with family, while Al spent it cooking for his boys in Ridgecrest. We are already planning our exciting get away adventures for next year!

Dena, moved into a three bedroom house with a fellow teacher, Nicole, in Lomita.  It is really nice and is perfect for all the social gatherings they have (plus they have room for parents to visit!).  We were fortunate to celebrate Dena’s 28th birthday in full Halloween Costume on October 30th along with about 75 of her friends.  She keeps busy teaching, traveling, and visiting family as much as she can.  She and Tiona had an exciting adventure attempting to hike the John Muir Trail from Yosemite to Mt. Whitney in August with their father.  However, they didn’t quite make it!  I got a call from Tiona telling me they had it and to pick them up in Mammoth, so they made it about 60 of the 210 miles.  Their tale of the four days of hiking was quite a story.

Tiona decided to go back to Boise full time as a grad student.  She is hoping to get her master’s degree by May 2007.  Even though she physically resides in Boise, she seems to make it back to Vegas a lot – she just can’t seem to keep away from being spoiled by her Aunt Donna and Uncle Keith (who miss her terribly)!  Right now as I am typing this letter, she is off to Costa Rico with a friend from Ohio who is going to visit his aunt for ten days-one of those once in a life time experiences that she could not pass up.  Since she was leaving before the end of the semester, she had to cram like crazy to get all her finals/papers done before she left (hopefully she finished her last paper last night that she was still working on at 10:00p.m.!!).

Ashley is now a full fledged driver, which is really nice because I do not have to chauffer her around anymore!  She is a junior now with a full load at Burroughs and also takes a Pre Calculus/Trig class up at the college two nights a week.  She also is keeping busy being the Boys Basketball Manager/Stats Girl.  I keep telling her she needs to get a job, because sometimes I feel like the only time I see her is to give her money – but she is just too busy so I guess I will just have put up with being the “Bank of Ashley” for a while longer.

Al’s son’s, Chris and Brian, both live here in Ridgecrest in an apartment together.  They come to visit quite often to do their laundry and hang out which is nice.  Chris is busy with his on-line business and is still taking classes on-line toward his bachelor’s degree.  Brian is working on setting up his own business working with computers and plans to take more college classes.  When Al has a computer problem, Brian is always the one to call for his expertise.  Jason still lives in Vegas and works at the bank there.

My dad, now 85, still is in Vegas living on his own at Donna and Keith’s.  He is slowing down a little bit, but still goes out occasionally for breakfast and gambling at the Skyline and walks to get his cans a few days a week.  He won’t go anywhere out of town anymore, but fortunately I can see him in Vegas a lot.

This year I am especially thankful for all the wonderful times I can spend with family and friends.  That is what makes life so special and I am very fortunate to have such special family members and friends.  I hope all of you have a wonderful holiday season and a very happy and healthy year “2005”.

Love to all, Barb and Al Maletsky and Family

Merry Christmas 2008

Dearest Family and Friends,

This year, I will begin by sharing my sadness in the loss of my dad at the age of 88 to prostate cancer. He passed away August 29th in a hospice care facility in Las Vegas .  Most of the family was able to spend good quality time with him for the few weeks before his passing which we are all very thankful for.  Despite this loss, all my family continues to be very thankful for our many blessings, for the special times we are able to share with one another, and mostly for our health.
Al and I continue to work, even though we both would love to retire now!!!  Our big trip this past year was to Cape Cod with both my sisters and their husbands.  We flew into Boston and then drove out to Cape Cod where we stayed in Yarmouth .  We were able to drive most of the Cape and spent time in Provincetown , took the ferry out to Nantucket, went to the JFK Museum , Cape Cod Chip Factory and Cape Cod Brewery, and ate great food all along the way! J  We also went into Plymouth , Massachusetts , visited the Plimoth Plantation, saw Plymouth Rock (the size of a small boulder) and convinced the guys to have a family “Pilgrim” picture taken (which was hilarious). We also took the train into Boston (since my brother-in-law, Keith, was too chicken to drive) and spent the day taking a Duck Tour, visiting the original Christian Science Church (my mother’s family’s religion), and again, eating!  It was a great
week.

Our six children and their families are still all doing well.  Granddaughter, Sydney is now two years old and driving Dena crazy some days!!  I still think she is pretty close to perfect though and I continue to spoil her as much as I can.  Tiona and Brok bought a place in Kent , Ohio , and are busy fixing it up.  Tiona still loves her job with Key Bank and has recently gotten a promotion and a raise.  Thankfully, she has been able to fly out to spend time with family quite a bit in the last year.  We are all now staying in contact with each other through the use of a video webcam so we can now share special events which helps with living so far apart.  Ashley is now a Sophomore at Cal State Long Beach, a member of a Sorority, working at Rock Bottom Restaurant and Brewery in Long Beach and living in an apartment with two friends.  She is so busy that the only way I get to see her is if I go down to Dena’s to visit.

Brian and Chris are still in Chico , both working in good jobs, and doing well.  They really like it up there but occasionally take time to come back to Ridgecrest to visit us.  Jason, still in Vegas, is working a new job and is doing really well.  He and Rachel bought a house and they have been busy fixing it up.  Cher is in Kindergarten this year already and is growing up so fast.

Al and I are now looking forward to traveling in our new 26 foot travel trailer which we just purchased in October.  We took it on its maiden voyage to Pahrump, of all places, for a free weekend that was given to us from the dealer.  It turned out to be the most beautiful campground we have ever been to.  We met Donna and Keith with their new trailer too.  The campground was on a beautiful lake, grass and trees everywhere, perfect weather, and had a casino and everything right there.  It was a perfect “first trip”.  My other sister, Tiona and husband Ron, also have a brand new trailer so we are hoping to spend a lot of time camping together, along with the rest of the family.
I hope that this letter finds you all healthy and happy.  May God Bless our Country and help our newly elected administration pull it out of the mess it has gotten into the last few years!!!!!  Have a great and prosperous 2009!!!!!!!

Love to all,
Barb and Al Maletsky and Family
